Is there a world that's like space and you keep going higher? I remember after you pass all of the star worlds, this happens. Know what I'm talking about?

I believe you mean the special world. At star world 5,there is a secret exit to take you there. These also happen to be the eight hardest stages in the game. If you beat all eight, some of the enemies will be changed around for the rest of the game.
