like for making music cs to play in my car?

will i need special software i'm not sure what will come with this notebook from dell i get it on monday.

Did you format the the CD? Secondly.. your computer has a DVD opening.. does it have a CD opening.. you know.. you push a little button and it opens and you put your CD in? You indicated that it did not.. Mine has both and I am surprised that YOU do not have both.. Are you sure? If yours says DVD.. then you cannot use it for a CD

Yes, DVD-burners burn CDs just as well as CD-burners.
