That really depends on what you are using the computer for. Computers generally have a good lifespan. I used my old desktop computer for about 5 years (mainly used it for work, not many video games). However, if you are planning on playing video-intensive games or doing other tasks that require fast processor speeds, a lot of RAM, good video card, etc. such as video editing, I would recommend getting a new one or upgrading the old one when you feel that the computer is running quite slow and that you are spending more time waiting for it to load than actually doing work. There is no concrete number, but those are the guidelines I follow.

Try to put yourself on a schedule now while you still can, Computers are highly addicting. Say time yourself to be on about 2-3 hours per day.
