with the exception of the 4x4 low lamp, checked the bulb ok.

Motor on the side of transfer case maby faulty, I have seen these go bad on alot of ford suv's and trucks, if this motor is faulty it is unable to shift into 4x4. Turn 4x4 on and see if you can hear clicking under center of vehicle, if not this is probally whats wrong

It's more likely the little sensor switches on the transfer case are bad. The shift module senses that they're not right and just keeps it in 2wd. The sensor module comes off easy and doesn't cost too much. I fixed mine by resoldering the contacts.

Could be the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).It also has a role in 4x4 operation.

Electrical! Check your fuses, if that doesn't work out to be the problem then the switch is probably bad. I don't work on Fords but on many other makes specialty tools are required to change the switch!
