When the combustion process takes place due to the burning of the candle , gases are liberated that ascend up since they are lighter and hot ...As they ascend up they get cooler and compress the periphery of the flame thereby making the flame tear shape...

actually it is tears that are flame shaped. that is why they burn your cheeks
