Well Hope, I've been doing this for 50 years now so, listen carefully.
First you need kindling. Lot's of it and, once you get the kindling going and the fire, keep it going even if it's a small one.

Use dry wood to start with and if you can, hard wood. Usually wood runs forty dollars a cord cut if you live in an area that has it.
A fireplace is the worst kind of heat you can use, it wastes about 80% of the heat, going up the chimney. Make sure you have a clean chimney. On the fire department we had 35 chimney fires the first few months of the year last year. Be careful Honey, please. Make sure your flu is open, when your done make sure it's closed.

You need to re-read what you are asking and see if you can figure out what you mean. I take it that the wood will not light in your fire place. Maybe you have wet wood, wood not seasoned, you are not using enough kindling, trying to get a log going instead of smaller pieces first and not using a Charcoal lighter fluid. Also try using newspaper,do not use that shiny paper.

Most hard aware stores sell a product that is made by the fake log companies. It is basically a fool proof kindling. You just place the whole package under the log grate & light it. They are fairly cheap & may help to light slightly damp wood.

Assuming you know how to use a fire place. I use a hair drier and blow air on the kindling fire to get it going better. it only takes about 5 min try it.
