Man Utd was never the richest club in the world.
On paper they might have appeared so, but the reality was/is, that they could never raid the transfer market and buy players at will.
They could perhaps buy 1 (at best 2) big name players each season, but could never compete with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus or even, Chelsea, in terms of buying and paying top wages.
The simple fact is that these clubs have very, very rich owners, who don't mind writing cheques for millions and do not mind their clubs declaring losses.
Because of this buying, selling (for lower) and paying high wages, they finish below United in the rich list.
But in terms of spending power, United still have much catching up to do.

I feel that although Man Utd are one of the richest and most in debt sport clubs in the world they are hated because of many different factors.
1: Success through out the late 90's brought back old feelings of hatred from many football fans. Afterall it does become extremely tiresome when one club successfully dominates a league as they did during the early period the premiership.
2: They were and still are a fairly pompous team otherwise why would they call their stadium the "theatre of dreams" when clearly some of the best football in the past ten years has come from other clubs rather than united.
3: At various periods through out the clubs history they have conspired to win by deception (fact). Whether it be through paying referees or opposition team members for gambling purposes Man Utd have a cloudy past which is littered with fines that have been imposed on them by the FA for these different discrepencies.*

Because most Man Utd fans have never even been to Old Trafford. I know dozens of southerners who profess to be supporters but when asked couldn't even give the link to Liverpools greatest ever manager. People who can not name the best side for the present era let alone the past. Now Chelsea have temporarily taken over as the best, they have become the boo boys main target. I wish somebody could spend that sort of money on my team.

Because they are the richest club in the world. Everyone wants success for their own side and if that doesn't come along something has to be blamed. And if it is a club having money then Manchester United - but surely Chelsea more now - will be disliked because of it. I think it is called jelousy (and I don't support any Premiership side)!

Man Utd are so widely hated by other supporters because the success man utd has had in the last 16 years.Man Utd brings in more money every year from sales of merchandise and other Man Utd stuff than any other club. This Shows in the fact that Chelsea cost abramovich £60 million , butt Man Utd cost Glazier £500million.
Manchester United headed the Premiership revenue league table (and Deloitte’s global Football Money League) at £172m(1st globally), followed by Chelsea (£144m and fourth globally) who had substantially narrowed the gap, then Arsenal (£114m and sixth globally). Man Utd are hated because of these facts and their dominance. People say that man utd got no real spending power , that's a load of rubbish Man U simply dont need to spend any money.

Because when your team has money you can buy the best players - which when you think about it is unfair. Everyone should have a sporting chance - like boxing where a featherweight does not fight a heavyweight boxer.
Plus 98% of Man U fans (fact) have never been to Old Trafford. Which means to me that they are people who just follow a club because it wins.
P.S. I'm a grumpy Pompey Fan! I live in Portsmouth therefore I support them. Do you live in Manchester?

That kind of money & monopoly in any sports breeds hatred, arrogance and contempt. Look at the Yankees in baseball; but Man United has to walk the walk ie- WIN the title and be the most dominant team.

Because people who love football will support clubs with good players who love playing it. Not players who are in it for the money...thinking of one player who claimed to "always be a blue"...hahaha.
Football should be about sport. In Man U's case it's a corporation like McDonalds. Plus arrogant, tho successful, managers don't help.
Other than that, everybody loves McDonalds...sorry the Bucaneers...sorry Man U.
