I am just starting fashion design at my local community college and I need a good sewing machine to get started on. I am taking a beginning sewing course, because I don't know how to sew, and I need to know what a good sewing machine will be for me. The ideal will be simple, but flexible enough that I won't have to replace it after my first semester.

I would suggest taking the class first. If you like the machines used in the class, get one similar. I use a Light industrial Singer 20U...although I don't recommend this for a beginner, Singer makes excellent machines. I have also been told that Juki is a comparable machine, although I have no first hand experience.

I just got a Singer Simple...it is pretty basic, but there are quite a few other attachments (like different presser feet for different purposes) that you can purchase to use with it. It also has a button hole setting which is kind of cool. You can get them at Wal-Mart and I believe they are right around $99 or so.It would be the perfect beginning sewing machine because there is nothing complicated about it...very easy to use. I really like mine a lot. I don't know a lot about other brands of machines, but I know Singer is one of the best. My mama has an old Singer and it still runs like a charm.
