Hey, I'm glad you've chosen to take up cheerleading. It is great you have gymnastics experience, its required for high school.

Stunts you need are back handsprings, front handsprings, possibly back tucks, pikes, toe touches, double toe touches, herkies, spread eagles, aerials, front tucks...

To get prepared, start RUNNING! You may not think you have to run a lot but, boy, you do! Start running just around your block a couple of times, then work your way around the neighborhood. It's good to be able to run at least a mile by try outs, other girls can probably run 3 miles if they are training hard.

Start lifting weights. You need lots of upper body strength. A 2 to 3 pound weight works fine, do 10 to 15 reps every other day, and lots of push-ups.

Strengthen your CORE! That's one of the keys to great dancing and stunting, start doing some crunches and sit ups!

Good luck in making the squad!

Well you have a huge advantage over many of the other girls since you have danced before. Just be prepared! They will check your flexibility, strength, and overall "qualities" of being a cheerleader. Being a cheerleader in high school no, I could definitely say it has been VERY hard for me and the whole team. We have practice every day during the week until 8.. Make sure you rest and stay healthy in every way you can before tryouts because strength is one thing you definitely cannot sacrifice. You will be carrying girls who are trusting you with their bodies. Good luck and hope you make the team.. its sooo fun !!

okay, practice your jumps: toe touches, pikes, herdler, and hurkeys. also be really sharp with your movements. a back handspring is a good skill to know how to do but it's usually bonus points. remember to smile!!! good luck!!!
