The Wikipedia article probably goes into more detail than I can reasonably type here, but I'll give a short synopsis. Leyte Gulf was actually a series of naval engagements, and basically the last naval battle of the war. In one of these, the Japanese fleet was steaming eastward through a channel and encountered a ring of US ships waiting outside. The Japanese fleet was shot to pieces. In other parts of this, the remaning Japanese super-battleship was sunk. This was pretty mich the end of the Japanese navy as an effecitve fighting force.

The Japanese naval forces were split into 2 task forces under the command of Admirals Kurita & Nishimura, moving eastwards through the Straits of San Bernardino & Surigao respectively to oppose the American invasion fleet supported by Vice-Admiral Kinkaid's 7th Fleet.

Halsey's 3rd Fleet was tasked to protect the invasion fleet but at a crucial moment, decided to swing northward to destroy Ozawa's decoy fleet. This led to a near fatal short of firepower & defence for the forces engaged by Kurita's forces.

This was one of the most significant battles fought in the pacific theater of wwII. Admiral Halsey's fleet was able to dispatch most of what was left of the Japanese naval forces making it impossible for Japan to use their navy effectively for the remainder of the war. It was also the battle in which the first kamikaze attacks were carried out. Also it was the battle that saw the horror of the men of Taffy 3. They were left to survive in shark infested waters for days before they were rescued.

I sure don't know anything about the battle, but there is a funny story related to the destoyer of that name - USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) lost one of her CIWS cannons when we backed into her in the middle of the night one time.
