For most people it would rock their foundations. I have witnessed a UFO with my mom once. It was so eerie. I was so glad that someone was there to witness it with me!

It is easier for people to believe you are mistaken than it is for them to believe there is something out there and it's coming here.
One of the reasons the government steadfastly denies the existence of UFOs is we have no defense. These things flit in and out of our atmosphere and there's nothing that can catch them. If they were hostile, we'd be sunk.
Fortunately, there's no indication that the UFOs are hostile. With the exception of a few abduction stories, most UFO encounters are limited to people seeing them.
By the way, people in rural communities in Wyoming, Montana, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico are less likely to laugh than people in big cities. When you have a fifty year old rancher who doesn't drink and is a very fine man in all other respects say that he's seen a UFO, people believe him. We also have more sightings out here than city folk do. You can see more.

Short, and somewhat rude sounding answer is they are ignorant.
Long version is that many people fear what they don't know. When you say you see something different or of a paranormal origin, people don't know if it's true, something out of the normal, will force them to believe in something new etc. It's easier to discredit the event then to believe.
They are ignorant, or unaware of the origin of the item. You may say you saw a UFO. They think you mean little green men, war of the worlds, proof that god doesn't exist whatever and they don't want to believe any of that so they try to ridicule you.
In fact, if I see anything in the sky, technically it is a UFO to me as I haven't got a clue what the exact make or model of aircraft it is, hence it is an UNIDENTIFIED flying object. We just assume that when someone says UFO they mean aliens.
As always, my thoughts, my opinions, my fault.

I believe you saw one. I believe in UFO's as UFO stands for UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT, and if you see something flying in the sky and don't know what it is, it is a UFO. Only once you know what it is does it stop being one!!

I believe you, but people laugh when you say that because they're scared and laughing is the only way they can express their fear. Even if they don't know they're scared of the U.F.O.

Because it always is a cloud, plasma ball, weather balloon, experimental aircraft, etc. We always use cloaking technology and cannot be seen.

Just because YOU can't identify what you saw flying doesn't mean a reasonable explanation doesn't exist are you qualified to make the decision?
