Which one should i try?

It depends on what you want to do -- art or photography. I use PS to adjust my photographs and so Elements is all I need. But, if you're doing artwork, you'll want the full-blown CS version. (Expensive!!)

The latest version I own is 5.5 . It has all of the tools I need to manipulate photographs, and I can also use some of the tools to play with pictures, and make them more artsy. Sure you can spend a lot of money on the latest editions but I can do everything that I need to with the version that I have and I didn't have to shell out $500.
