The first one to answer had a point, no one really knows if the universe is infinite. But, assuming it is, some one else said that stars dont comprise the most matter in the universe. Only stars make up only 3 percent of the total matter in the universe, dark matter and dark energy comprise about 90 percent of the matter. And remember that stars usually form in clusters (nebulae) to form galaxies. But yeah, no one really knows if the universe is inifinite or not, I mean Voyager 1 and 2 have only just left the gravitational reach of our sun, so we still have a long way to go.

We don't know if its infinite or finite, I personally think that an infinite universe doesn't quite make sense if it all came from the singularity that started the Big Bang.
According to General Relativity, there are three possible "shapes" of the universe, open and infinite, flat and infinite, or closed and finite. This all depends on the density of the universe being less than to, equal to, or greater than to a number called the critical density. As of the year 2000, when the Physics book I'm using as a source was published, initial studies point to a flat and infinite universe where the density of the universe is estimated to be almost the critical density. But that's only early studies, I think once we find out more about dark matter, dark energy and some of the other things we don't know much about, the density of the universe will surpass the critical density, therefore confirming a finite universe.

Who says there are limited numbers of stars in the universe?Nobody has ever counted.The truth is that the universe is expanding everyday and at some point start contracting.This has not been proved therefore exists as a theory.It is just a rough guess of the scientists that there are a total of 100 billion stars in the milky way only and humans do not have any counting after trillion(i don't know counting ahead of it)which means that the number of stars are infinite.

No one knows how many stars there are in space. The number of stars does not define the boundaries of space. If there is a finite number of stars in space, it does not mean that space is not infinite. Stars don't create space. Space creates stars. Space has the infinite ability to create stars.

Well there are a limited number of stars that we can see, so there is no telling what might be farther out into space. One theory, however, is that while the Universe is infinate, it started out extreamly small, with all the mass of the Universe packed into something smaller than the moon. Than it exploded and all the pieces have been moving away from the center ever since. If this theory is true, it would explain why there are a limited number of stars. But unless someone can prove this theory true, we still have to assume that there could be much more outside of our range of vision.

There could be a finite number of stars in an infinite amount of space, no? It'll just be mostly empty. Another idea is that space is not infinite but actually curves back onto itself, so if you go in one direction long enough, you'll end up back here. Like a two-dimensional cartoon walking around a beachball. Being two-dimensional, it could not understand how it could go back to where it was. So maybe we're the cartoons, and the universe is not just 3D but 6D or 10D.

Space might be infinite, and there might be an infinite number of stars in it.
In fact, there might be an infinite number of "copies" of our Universe, including copies of you and me and everything. The number of possible alternate histories of the material within our event horizon is enormous, but finite. In an infinite Universe, this finite "known Universe" would be duplicated an infinite number of times.
All of this occurs, however, in regions that are inaccessable to us. To us, our single Universe within our event horizon is all we can know.

No one knows if space is infinite or not. There are only theories and none of them are provable at the moment.
The fact is, we cannot know if Space is curved in on itself or if it expands in all directions "forever".
The problem is the speed of light. Information wether it be Visual or mathematical cannot be observed beyond a certain point called the Horizon.Science calls these Light Cones or time cones.
Anything that exsists outside of these Cones will forever be beyond our observation UNLESS physics breaks down and the Speed of light violated.
So we can Know for sure what exsistes in our OWN Cones, but never outside of it.
So the answer to your question is that while there is a limited amount of matter in our own Cone, we do not know how much matter existes outside of our limited cones.

There is only a limited number of KNOWN stars, and even then, astronomers and astrophysicists are still making educated guesses. Also, take into consideration that new stars are constantly being born, and old stars are constantly dying, so the number of stars is constantly changing. Therefore, there is no set number of stars.
