So by your logic, we should just sit on our hands and watch the sea drown huge areas of the world. Good plan.

Yes it is an excuse to raise taxes. If something needs removing from the atmosphere we have Chemists and engineers to solve the problem.
It would be very easy for the Government to cut car emissions simply by cutting down engine sizes. No car unless pulling a caravan needs an engine bigger than 1500-1600 cc.Similarly they could have restrictors that work to signals that would not let speeds exceed limits ie. in 30 zones the car would not be able to exceed 30 in 40 not able to exceed 40 etc.It would be easy and cheap.
Similarly it should be easy to put latest fuel efficient engines in commercial vehicles so long as engine mounting points match as also the gear boxes etc.Not a great engineering feat.
Its not what the rest of the world is doing it is what we are doing, then others may follow the example.
Taking this country back to a state where you stay within three miles of where you were born is ludicrous no other country is going to do that, nor walk a mile to school with children in pouring rain when there is a car outside the door.Keep in mind walking one mile to school means a mile back then a return from school another two miles. If we sort our road vehicles sensibly then others will follow. Our scientists and engineers need to be put on the case . The problem is a will and common sense.

There are many countries in the world who act irresponsibly with regards to the environment. Even though the pollution rate here in the UK is relatively low in comparison, the mindset of the people towards pollution is nevertheless disappointing. There could be so much more done. It will cost effort and some money, but I think it will be worth it!
In Germany the recycling system is very advanced. In the first years after it was introduced, the loss of money was extraordinary. But since then the technology has been developed further and cost for oil and other materials have risen so much, that countries like China are now BUYING the recycled plastic bottles to make jumpers out of them, to name just one example. So they are now on the way of MAKING money from recycling.
It's not an easy way to go, but the more countries are getting involved, the cheaper the technologies will become. Alternative fuels for cars are being used in Japan already. With government subsidies they and private alternative energies could become the norm. It is already being discussed that in the future all countries in the world should pay 1% of their GDP for environmental improvements. I think that this is a price worth paying.
The only downside is that our government is pretty incompetent with managing our money and with getting the masses on their side on this issue. What a shame!

Taxes will not have any effect on global warming, only action by all countries, and not just the U.K. will there be an effect. We are one of the lower end of polluters in the industrialised world and increasing our taxes and lowering our emissions when other countries aren't, will effect our economy against the economies of other countries. The poorer citizens will be hugely affected as they will not be able to afford cars etc. and to the rich it will not make any difference. This is another government ploy to get taxes by stealth. If we shut down our industry and took all our vehicles off the road, China alone would make up what was saved by doing this, within two years.

Global warming needs to be tackled now .America is responsible for 25%of the causes of pollution, closely followed by China (who opens a new coal fired power station every week) plus India as the economy grows .
The U.K. is responsible for less than 2%.
If the taxes proposed are to combat global warming then I agree .
But it is very likely that any taxes that British Government
implements will go straight to the treasury and very little
will actually used for combatting global warming.

This labour government are rubbing their hands with glee, having found something else they can tax us on. Of course, the biggest burden won't fall on the big polluters. After all, if a company is currently making £100 million profit, an extra £10-£15 million a year isnt going to hurt that much. But to someone whose on £20k a year, an extra £1300 is going to leave a big hole.

Yes it’s just another way to extort more taxes out of us, and this “Global Warming” must be godsend to the government, what is global warming, as far as I can see it is just the natural pattern of our planets weather, its been going on for thousands of years, ice ages , warm ages, are we all trying to be King Canute.. we already pay a climate change levy….what is next .. tax us when the sun comes out.. or it’s raining…manipulation of the masses that’s what it is..

Of course if global warming is as bad as some people proclaim everybody must do something about it. Trouble is for every one who says it is, another one says 'rubbish'. As well as this I have no trust in this British government who are tax mad and having taken your money most of it gets wasted,I could give you examples but I would run out of space.

I'm waiting for a politician to explain what they're going to spend the extra tax revenues on that will have such a definitive effect on improving our environment.
If you can afford a £60,000 Range Rover you can afford an extra couple of grand a year to park it and tax it, so if they won't stop using these vehicles what is it the government are going to spend the tax revenues on?
I won't hold my breath waiting for a politician to answer this......

The USA is by far the main polluter, and any taxes created by rich men tend to affect the poor the most.
