Look at the languages that are installed on your webhosting computer. If you use a Linux computer, then you probably have PERL for making CGI scripts and PHP for other stuff. Learn MySQL or the database that is installed on your host.

I have been programming computers for over 40 years. Even though it is hardly used anymore I would recommend Basic if you have no programming experience. You can learn it in a few days and It will teach the fundamentals before going into a more complicated language. Languages originally were designed to start at the top and run through the code, branching where appropriate. The newer languages are event driven. Parts of code are executed depending on what is happening, such as a button was pressed.

Well aside from HTML, AJAX is currently the best language for dynamic websites. Along with that JavaScript and XML are useful.

Patrick, look into open source software. There is a lot out there, much of it written in the PHP language.
But, you need more than programming. You also need to do system administration.
