I think that your "soul mate" stuff is all crap.... you work out the relationship the way you want and it becomes what you want it to be.

I have been married for 3 years and together for over 5. The way you know is....well its something that you feel deep in the depth of your soul. Something that you know you have never felt with anyone before him/her. I am not going to tell you that he/she may be the first thing you think of when you wake up or the last when you go to bed. I will say this....nothing in the world will matter anymore...the good or the bad. You will want to be with him/her everyday. All the little quirks you will love. The thought of that person will make you smile and above all "the Kiss". the kiss will be drowning....you'll never want to leave his/her lips. You'll never care about making love...just the touch of his/her hand, to see their eyes gaze upon you with love. And NO MATTER what comes your way any obstacle you will always overcome together....THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW!!

I am exactly 20 hours from my first wedding anniversary. I have known my wife for four years though.
How do you know? One day you will wake up and the first thing you think about is that person. The last thing you think of before you go to sleep is about is that person.......You'll be going about your normal day and wonder what they are upto. The best way to describe it? well, If you don't know, then you haven't found the person. Lame answer, but its so very true.
