We currently have AOL 8.0 as a dial up. The computer speed is OKAY.... We want DSl because we hear it's much faster. We have a few questions:

Is it really much faster?

What is the difference between
Maximum Downstream Connection Speed Up to 768K VS 3.0 Mbps?

What is the difference between Maximum Upstream Connection Speed Up to 128K va 768 K?

I guess what I amasking is between the two is it really that much faster?

I have a download that takes about 20 minutes on dial up how long with it take with 728 K? How long would it take with 3.0MPS?

Thanks in advance!

Yes DSL is much faster although cable would be even faster.
The difference between 768k and 3mbps is that your download speed can go that high but only if your close to the server. That means that the farther you are from your service provider the slower your speed is going to be.(CATCH MY DRIFT). The same goes for your upstream. So the bottom line is dsl is much faster depending on how far you live from the server.
As for the 20 minute download, It would take approximately 2 minutes for it to download on 768k and approximately 30 sec. on 3.0mbps. I recommend going with cable because its always on and your speed doesn't suffer because of where you live so think carefully. Bye and enjoy..

With AOL, you are getting like... 40K, but that is with advertisement streaming in at you.

When you get DSL at even 768K, the math says it's almost 20 times faster. You will be thrilled with it.

Now, here is my take on the whole thing. When you get DSL, you won't know how good it is at your house, until you try it. When you activate the minimum service, then test it completely at http://www.dslreports.com If it is really working at the advertised price, then stick with it, until you want FASTER.

But if it is WAY OFF of the advertised price, don't jump to the higher priced service, because you will pay more for more disappointment. That's when you would switch to High Speed service through your Cable company.

Good luck

Dial up, I once tried to download a movie trailer, after about an hour the system burped and the whole thing was lost.
Cable or DSL, movie trailers take about 1 minute, maybe 2

the diffence between dial up and dsl speeds is like the difference between a bicycle and a motorcycle.

dsl is way faster than dialup

i'm on a t1 line which is slower than dsl and i can download 728kb in 2 seconds. t1 is 1.5mps

Yes it's a bit faster. It's definately worth the upgrade. You should not be using dial up

I'd still recommend cable.

properly, to be short, the only you reported on good is a swifter pc, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that the only on the backside can carry plenty greater documents. it wall relies upon on what you will particularly have, the only on backside can carry plenty greater, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that that's slower. i in all probability would purchase the only on good with the aid of fact of its stable velocity, and then purchase an exterior HD if i wanted greater desirable area, 250 Gigabytes is alot of area, yet once you utilize movies and track and stuff alot it may run out of room.
