Something to look forward to I guess, like winter is cold and dark and depressing, but hey, Jesus was born and we get to have lots of parties and presents and do family stuff that although you say you hate it, it's pretty fun!
As it's for RE, I'd say that it makes a community, or a country, or a religion, feel united in their joy (or sadness for Easter). We also celebrate to remind us, would we even know half these facts if we didn't celebrate them each year? It's also an excuse to show people we care about them when celebrating birthdays and anniversaries and stuff. Lots of reason!

Celebrations are a break in the monotony in daily life. They are an excuse to eat and drink too much without being censored for it. They are the reason we put ourselves in debt for December that we will still be paying for the next June.

Celebrations remind us why we avoid spending too much time in the same room with certain family members. They can be quite useful when we use them to pump our drunken co-workers for information that will prove handy in the office later.

Mostly, though, they are one more thing we do simply because we have always done it and always will. We are creatures of habit....

Most Holidays are so commercialized, that I refuse to celebrate.
I could care less about Halloween or Thanksgiving and others, even Christmas is such a drag, you see Xmas merchandise in stores in September. It is getting ridiculous.
