Strip the old paint, then Follow the 3 step KBS system for painting metal: Clean w/ waterbased cleaner so no residues are left once rinsed. Secondly, and most importantly, treat it with RustBlast which gives a gentle metal etch and also leaves a zinc phosphate film which aids in good paint adhesion. I would also recommend using their 3rd step which is permanently sealing the metal with Rustseal before you topcoat it with your own colored paint b/c even galvanized metal will rust over time. You don't have to topcoat the rustseal if you don't want to though.
The products go along way, you may only need their smallest System Kit for about 16 bucks.

Here is what you do:
Remove the oil based paint completely, then sand the metal with 180 grit sandpaper. Wipe it clean & dry with mineral spirits, then give it 2 coats of an automotive type self etching primer. (can be found at any good auto supply store in spray cans)
After the primer has dried, lightly scuff it with 600 grit sandpaper & apply the finish. I recommend spray can enamel. (don't use latex or oil base house type paint, it just won't stick)

PRIMER-Must be a LATEX primer. Oil based paint will not properly stick to galv. metal. look up "saponification" it is what happens when you put oil based paint over new galvanized metal.
check with a paint store for a "galvanized metal primer" it will be latex. sandblasting i guess would work, but then why use galv, in the first place if you are going to sandblast all of the zinc off the metal. you can still topcoat with oil after you prime with the latex.

You need to put a primer on it that is for galvanized metal then paint it with what you want.

ive used it & i think the Kbs system makes the most sense. unless you seal the metal first, peeling paint won't be your only problem. do it right and ya won't have to do it again.

It's not that easy to find but they do make primer for galvanized.
