Well, that's pretty easy for most tasks, however don't start trashing your mouse yet. I prefer to use the keyboard instead of a mouse for most tasks, but somethings are just meant to be done with a mouse.
For starters, switching from window to window, press "Alt + Tab"
You can always scroll from the keyboard from pressing the "Up/Down/Left/Right," or use the "Page Down/Up" keys
If the window isn't active (the top of the window is faded out), just do the "Alt + Tab" thing again.
All sorts of things can be done with the keyboard with out a mouse.
Pressing "Tab" goes from one form field to another
Etc, Etc...
On Firefox, if you want to switch between tabs, just press "Ctl + Tab"
I'm positive that there are many, many more keyboard shortcuts.

Look up sites with software for the disabled. Some programs will let the arrow keys move the cursor, though whether there's a program that would turn the numeric pad into a mouse pad, I don't know.
Some browsers have keyboard navigation built in (eg. Opera, Firefox) which includes selecting links on the page via arrow keys. This is also how Lynx (the DOS text webbrowser) works, but I doubt you'll use that.
As well, many programs have hot keys, and many of them are programmable. But if you're talking about text editors and the like and don't know how to use the keyboard, well...if you can't say anything nice, etc.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
