I've been self employed, working online for over a decade. Through working with many strangers, I have made many new friends that I have never met, and will likely never meet. Some I have spoken to on the phone, and many I have not. I do consider these people to be friends, and have helped many of them out when they have needed it, just as I would a friend in real life. They have also been there for me when I have needed something. I actually loaned somebody $15k that I have never met, and never spoken to. It was done without a contract, just an eMail with a rough idea as to when I would be repaid. No problems, we had become friends and I knew that he was good for it. I have also met many people in real life that I have met online, some of them are still friends today. Actually, I recently moved to Costa Rica, and already had a network of friends before I arrived.
