I wanted to be a rock star when I was in high school. I had the friends that could have made it happen, but I listen to my wonderful, considerate, ever trusting, encouraging father whom I call "THE DREAM KILLER"and got a real job working as a bagger at a store. I would like to have a band someday but I am getting up there in age. My two part question to you is..one.. why dream did you have when you were young and who squashed that dream for you? And two..Do you still feel like you can make your dream happen?

Boy, you guys and gals have very good answers. It's going to be hard to decide who gets the points. I do want to ask though where you find a group of guys to rock with?

There was a test called the "Gate" test and we all took it in first grade. After that test my two best friends would leave the school we attended for "accelerated" learning 2-3 days of the week and I was stuck at school without them.
By the time I was in 6th grade I was getting in a lot of fights and suspended from school for hitting a teacher. They of course sent me to the school counselor who opened my records and said, "why didn't you attend the Gate program? You got the highest scores in our district!" I went on to get expelled from 2 High Schools, a Boarding School and even 2 Projects.
Mom and Dad never told me about the letter they got about passing the Gate exam. They called the school back in first grade and said they didn't want their son to be "different" from the other kids.
What were my dreams? To be a Criminal... I won't go into detail, but not one stopped me. Thankfully I learned from my mistakes before I ever got caught, I learned that being the tough guy left you with a dirty conscience... so now I'm serving in the military trying to repay my good luck in service to this country.
Can't wait to get out, and just be "different!" =P
Mom and Dad... it's not your fault, but I can't help but wonder what might have been.
*ADDED* A few of my boys and I jam on Sundays... it's what we do instead of church, since it's the only time we are all off together when we are deployed here.

1: I wanted to be a rocker, too, but the industry killed the dream, when I realized that it's damn near impossible to keep your creativity with producers and publishers telling you what to play, how to play, how to look, etc., so you could be their cash cow. It's better now, with Indie labels and jambands, and the Internet publishing, though.
2: I am over 40 and play a neat gig tonight with a band I put together a few years back. Love my current job (programmer) but also love the extra little carreer of a musician, especially since I don't have to compromise in my songs, because my money doesn't depend on music. I'm not a STAR, though - never wanted THAT, just to play music I love, and I did it, even though I am WAAAAAY up in the age compared to you :-)
So find a few good musicians and make songs you believe in and love and rock on, baby, no one can stop you.

My dream was to be a singer/song writer, and to perform in front of large crowds...and it happened i have also made a record, but the other thing that i wanted to become was an air hostess, and this didn't materialize simply because i was afraid of flying, i never really had anyone squash my dreams so to speak....but i do think that regardless of what people say never take their words as gospel, and we can all do whatever we put our minds too....you're never too old to do any thing in life, that's my motto.

You should be SO ashamed. You killed your own dream!!! All your father was doing was to encourage you to get a job paying some salary regardless how small and work while working toward your goals!!! I think you are a BIG loser.
