There is a poem from English class that I really like, but I had this class years ago. In the poem, a soldier shoots his enemy (possibly during WW 2) and grieves that they would have been great friends if they weren't enemies. Can you identify the name and author?

"The Man He Killed" is not the poem I was thinking of, but we are getting close!

Actually, it was the one I was thinking of. The first website I went to with it had the verse I remembered in really small font so I missed it. Thanks a lot!

Are you thinking of Thomas Hardy's, "The Man He Killed"?
