I've heard that the hypnotist can get people to do funny things or suspend their reality. Is this true? Anyone been hypnotized at a show and can share what happened?

I saw a "hypnotist" in action, several of the supposed hypnotized people kept missing their cues. It led me to believe that much of it is staged, It was a very funny show though.
