A lot of people get addicted and many wish they never even started.

Most people who've answered are forgetting the fact that most drugs feel good, at least the first time you use them. They increase levels of dopamine and seratonin in the brain, chemicals that are created and released in the body when it experiences pleasure.
The majority of problems start when people become addicted to drugs, and addiction is a disease that is incredibly difficult to overcome. It is an everyday struggle for addicts not to go back to their drug(s) of choice, smokers and drinkers included of course.
Some drugs are dangerous even when taken in small amounts, especially when you can't guarantee the purity and each person has to decide for themselves whether or not it's worth the risk. But few people would ever try them in the first place if someone hadn't told them that it felt good.

presumably i suppose its something that they like to do. i think its all down to personal choice really at the end of the day. i don't smoke or drink alcohol, nor take drugs but i don't wish to lecture people on how they ought to run their lives either. as i get older, i realise how important it is for me to lead a healthier lifestyle and in that i want to live as long as possible, meaning that i don't want to do anything that risks or jeopardises me physically and with drugs, mentally. i'm 25 and as a young human being, i have to take into consideration my health and well-being. i exercise as much as i can and eat a good diet where i have everything in moderation.

I don't get it either. I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of drugs but I never touched them. I don't even drink alcohol.

On the other hand - I went to Burger King two days ago and had a Whopper with cheese and large fries - so who am I to talk?

:)

I think most people are addicted to something. The something doesn't have to be what society considers wrong.

I don't understand people smoking, taking drugs, over drinking, etc. That sounds stupid to me.

However I'm 40 pounds overweight.

One pure and simple reason they try some thing and then get addicted to it. Its a way of escaping such a hectic world even by getting addicted to exercise its a form of escapism.

because some people like to live for the right now they want the pleasure of being high or whatever immediatly and worry about the consequences later. simple and true.

Hi, some things are highly addictive and as such addicts are weak to resist, the consequences usually dont deter.

I just feel somewhere inside they just stop caring. When i see George Micheal now physically he is no where near as attractive as what he used to be.It's quite sad to see him encourage his own demise.

No one ever thinks anything bad will happen to THEM , it happens to OTHER
people . Or they are just in so much pain that they don't care anymore , it depends .
