If an old computer has a lot of dust inside, there isn't a good way to clean it out. Most people use canned air to blow the dust away. I'd rather use a vacuum cleaner, but the same people who use canned air insist a vacuum cleaner will cause dangerous ESD. Obviously I don't want to damage the computer. It seems to me though, that either way there is high speed air moving dust around. Why is canned air considered safe but not a vacuum cleaner. Note: In case you haven't figured it out, I mean safe to the computer, not the person.

I would not use it all the time, but for an excess of dust, I would use a vacuum cleaner.

I start by using a cotton cloth and push the "dust bunnies" off of the main boards.

I then use the straight extension, and make every effort NOT to touch any of the electrical conductors or any of the circuit boards directly inside the case.

Good luck

i imagine if you use a vac with the nylon bristled head on it it would cause static but use it with or without the thin nozzle for getting into corners and you should be fine, also if you want to blow the dust out you can do what i do and use a foot pump for inflatables and point the nozzle into hard to reach places. it works fine and it is a hell of a lot more sensible than paying for cans of air. plus the air seems to be very cold from cans and maybe could damage a recently turned off componant due to effects of thermal stress.....NOW i'm starting to go off on a tangent.......

Before you clean the pc with either, and yes vacuums are safe to use, turn the pc off, unplug it and hit the power button to discharge any leftover current. Then you'll be safe.

i'm not sure why blowing air into your computer wouldn't create static but sucking air out of it will.. doesn't make sense.. i ued a vaccuum on my computer and i'm using it right now to respond to your question. i just wouldn't touch the vaccuum hose to the computer parts. happy cleaning

You can get special computer vacuums. Don't use a big one. They would have too much suction.
