As a profesional in the teen music sceene I would recomend almost anything played on commercial radio for a child of that age.

When I was 12 I wasn't really sure what I was into in musical terms, I listened to anything I didn't really find what I liked until I was about 13 when I discovered Rock and hard rock like Led Zepp. and Santana
If I'd received an Ipod when I was 12 i would have preffered to have it empty because I might not have liked the songs on it and I would have liked to put my own songs on it
So my advice to you is just give her an itunes voucher or get her Limewire ( which is free! ) or just give her some money and let her choose what she wants

It depends on the sort of music she normally listens to. If it's rock/indie/emo music, My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy would be a safe bet; just check that there aren't too many swear words in the songs.
If it's Hip Hop/RnB, most relatively new stuff like Cassie and Chamillionare will do.
Shakira's OK, too...
If I were you, though, I wouldn't put any music on her iPod in case she hates it; I'd give her an iTunes voucher or something, so she can choose herself.

There's some really, really strange answers coming out here. Anything on Disney Radio?! She's 12 not 4. You must have some idea of what music she likes? Perhaps wait until she's actually received the I-pod...then offer to buy some music for her...you'll be able to judge for yourself what's acceptable and what isn't.

no offence or anything, but if i were to receive an ipod for my birthday, i would rather have it empty than having some music in it. i might think that it is a used ipod or even worst, a stolen one. better to give her an ipod and ask her if she needs anything else just let you know. =) happy birthday to your daughter!

I'd leave it blank OR put the song 'happy birthday' on for her. If i was her i'd prefer blank, i enjoy putting music on mine, sort of like a cooler version of a button collection!

Why not leave the choice to herself. It will keep her occupied for a while choosing her own songs.
