should be fair for all - i gave up smoking 4 years ago and don't like to be in smokey atmospheres at all now - but that's my choice so i can avoid going to places i know will be smoke-filled.

I totally agree with you, all the landlord has to do is put in a really good air conditioning system and problem solved, years ago pubs always had a lounge and a public bar so you could choose where you wanted to go, why cant that be re-introduced, we are constantly being penalised for everything we do now and have less free will every year, all you hear now is ' human rights '...what happened to the smokers ' rights ' . The tax raised through the sale of tobacco products continues to be a major source of revenue for the Government, contributing around £10 billion annually, would'nt it be great if every smoker in the UK stopped smoking on Monday....where would they get the £10billion then !!!! I know smoking is a health hazard, but we certainly pay our way for being a smoker.

I've recently given up smoking and I now realise just how foul smelling it is and how much money it really costs.
We don't grow tobacco in this country so we are continually sending cash unnecessarily to other countries to feed our addiction.
I now back the plan to ban smoking in pubs and restaurants, the ban could be the catalyst for millions giving up the habit as it will ask the question what do you prefer: A beer with your mates or a smoke on your own?
Not only that I find it very difficult having recently given up constantly being exposed to smoke from other people in the bar, the cravings are bad enough without any more reminders.
Lets not forget that this is a deadly addiction that costs the NHS too much, so don't even start with the Tax argument for smoking.

How can the landlord exercise his discretion without getting people's backs up? If there is a total ban, then he can at least lean on that to justify the fact that there is no smoking in his premises. If he allows smoking at his discretion, there will be a lot of people who will feel aggrieved at being surrounded by smokers and inhaling their fumes. If he fails to allow smoking at his discretion, then there will be a great many disgruntled customers who resent the fact that he has adopted this option. At least with a total ban people know where they are.

I smoked for 7years, I started right after they passed a law in California you couldn't smoke in restaurants, by the time I turned 21 years(the legal drinking age), you couldn't smoke in bars and pubs either. Yeah it sucked to have to go outside in the cold and all that, but secondhand smoke is more deadly than people give credit for. I don't believe it is fair for other customers or employees of what ever business to sit in deadly carbonmonoxide, just because a few people have a vice. If you realized or if your none smoking friends realized what cigarette smoke was doing to them neither you nor they would have even thought of having your little straw poll. Also, a lot of nonsmokers say they don't mind, when they do, so they aren't rude.
I enclosed some info on second hand smoke, please read it.

Actually, I heard that since there has been a smoking ban here profits have gone up for pubs etc. I still don't see why there can't be exempt pubs for smokers and those who don't mind breathing the stuff, but the bar staff would have to be agreeable as well. I gave up about 5 years ago - best thing I did in my life.

Before the smoking ban was introduced in Ireland 2 years ago everyone said it wouldn't work. Then it came in and not only did it work universally and without problems, but everyone complied and every smoker I spoke to since says how great it is 'cos now they smoke less. Now they just nip outside a couple of times during an evening out instead of chain smoking all night. So actually, eveyone's happy, even the bar owners as more of us actually go out and spend money now we don't get asphixiated in the process.
The workplace smoking ban is one of the best things that happened to Ireland and it's about time the UK followed suit. I'm sick of inhaling other people's cigarettes while I enjoy my pint when I go there.

I think it is a good idea to ban smoking where people are eating such as restuarants but i do occasionally like the odd cigarette when i'm drinking.
I think pubs should have allocated smoking areas and people can choose whether they want to eat in that area i also think there should be allocated no smoking areas for those that don't like the smoke both with equal access to the bar.
I do also think that putting in the no smoking laws will dramatically reduce the money spent in pubs therefore putting our taxes up on other products such as petrol etc...

I don't know where you live, but here in San Antonio, Texas, neither the politicians nor the pub owners were smart enough to figure it out. So restaurants and clubs have walls now that separate smoking sections.
What needs to be addressed wherever smoking might be allowed, is simply exhausting the smoke and replacing it with clean air. However, until they get smart enough to figure this stuff out, let's keep the smoking ban....

I AGREE WITH YOU MATEY. sure the best person to ask is the person who probably knows these people the best.......
i.e. THEIR LANDLORD!!
you'll prob find the the idiots who thought of this amazing idea have either never been in a pub or don't smoke..... i don't thinks pubs will be the same without smokers in them (does that sound strange?)

To true the landlord should have the joice after all it is living and his profits that count.
If he chooses it to be a smokers domain then non smokers
have the choice not to frequent the pub and visa versa for smokers
