I doubt you always hear that. I'm diehard conservative, and have loved John Stewart throughout most of his career. Idisagree with him 99.9% of the time. As I always say to my friends, (I live in MAss so most of my friends are liberal lol) "I don't need to agree with you to like you." I watch daily Show almost every day. There are days when he is too bust screwing around with punditry to the point where I aint amused so I switch off, but those are rare.
As fo Colbert, I think he carved himself a hilarious nitch. Often, his satirical right wing rantings are my actual opinion, and I feel I'm being personally spoofed. I love it.
So I don't know who is saying that as far as who you talk to, but I have a good guess your are making a presupposition and posting it as such.

EDIT-I have seen more than one conservative on the Daily Show I might add. Rick Santorum comes to mind. Joe Scarborough was on Colbert recently. Stewart and Colbert , as a side note, treated conserative every bit as respectfully as any typical guest.

The Democrat Governor of Illinios, Rod Blagojevich, APPEARED ON "The Daily Show" and didn't even know it was a comedy. Yep, he thought it was a legitmiate news program.

At one point in the interview, a startled Blagojevich looked to someone off camera and said, "Is he teasing me, or is that legit?"

The segment, which aired two weeks ago, also featured Illinois Republican Rep. Ron Stephens, a pharmacist who opposes the governor's rule. Stephens has said he knew the show was a comedy.

"I thought the governor was hip enough that he would have known that, too," Stephens said.

Jon Stewart anyday. i've got watched the two for an prolonged time, and Colbert seems to charm to the adolescents and youthful adults, at an analogous time as Stewart is greater businesslike, thats the only be conscious that is composed of ideas. they are the two stupid and erratic, yet Colbert seems decrease priced and novel. He seems faking it, at an analogous time as Stewart seems evidently humorous. like the version between Jim Carrey (over-actor) and Robin Williams. Carrey gets laughs like Colbert, via silliness, and infantile humor, at an analogous time as attempt to be atleast 23 to truly understand a great style of Williams jokes. it is purely my opinion. I understand WHY maximum desire Colbert, with the aid of fact he appeals to the "idiots" and rednecks, and persons who particularly do no longer desire to think of. Stewart unquestionably engages your ideas together with his instinct and inference. at an analogous time as Colbert engages the little boy in everyone. i for my area use to desire/watch Colbert rather of Stewart, yet at some point I in basic terms have been given aggravated at his yelling, antics and the worst area the ANNOYS me for some reason. Like, unquestionably makes me disenchanted, is how he interupts his travellers. i'd by no potential bypass on Colberts tutor. next time watch Stewart and Colbert lower back to lower back, and additionally you will observe that Stewart unquestionably engages in philosophical, theoritical and deep conversations together with his travellers. Colbert will interupt with something stupid to make human beings giggle. i've got observe a great style of travellers unquestionably faux giggling with the aid of fact they desire the promotion/spot. remember, Stewart made Colbert who's today. Stewart got here first, and sarcastically, is often first in line in programming on cable.
