I am now a M1 mobile subscriber. My 2-year contract will be ending in a few months' time. I have long been wanting to change to Singtel. But the most important thing is that I don't want my mobile number to change. How do I go about that?

Do I have to wait for the contract to end? What must I do to cancel the line and apply for the number retention? Do I have to go to M1 to cancel the line first, then go to Singtel with my old mobile number to apply for a new line? Do I have to pay for such a service? Can I do these stuff online or do I have to go to the counters?

Thank you!

You go to SingTel and tell them you want to port your M1 number over. Right now, there's no true portability. SingTel will give you a new number and forward calls from your old number to the new one.

It costs you a one-time fee to enable this. If you can wait till mid next year, true portability will be available in Singapore. When that happens, you can change telcos and your number stays with you automatically.

You must take a new number from singtel and ask for a number retention at singtel also. You terminate your M1 plan only when you have already settled everything with singtel. This may take time.
