No really, I think if we knew that (whether anything matters in the end) the world would be a very different place indeed.

We bother to do anything because, at that moment, it was exactly what we wanted to do. For some reason, we envisioned a payoff for the action. The payoff could be emotional, physical, financial, or philosophical.
For example, why did you bother to post the question? You got some sort of payoff from it.

There is something in the human spirit that directs us and so we do bother. it is a feeling, but can't be proven. We do not turn off like light bulbs as we leave the human experience behind us. We always are, so we do bother, and the reasons start to become clearer as we progress.

We do what we do to make our time on this earth as interesting and as worthwhile and as much fun as it possibly can be.
There are some people who don't bother though...
