It depends on how far along you are when they dot he scan. If you are not 21 weeks then they are guessing! The sexual organs are not formed enough to see them before that time.

When my daughter was born, there were 8 couples in our Lamaze class. All of us had scans and only 2 of the couples had the sex that the scan said they would have. And those who had the right sex were 21 weeks preg or more.

well, if they tell you it's a girl, they just didn't see a, you know, penis in the ultrasound pics. i guess it could be wrong. if they see one without a doubt, then it's obviously a boy. they could have missed it if they didn't get a good view and maybe told you it's likely a girl because they didn't see one. what's the problem, though? do you just not know what to buy or what kinds of things to ask for at a shower? how sure was the ultrasound tech? can you have another one performed? or, maybe just buy gender neutral colors and stuff (which isn't difficult) until the baby is born.

Well....the biggest problem with ultrasounds to figure out baby gender is that the baby has to cooperate. If the baby is in a position where you can't see the groin area, or it is obscured by the umbilical cord, or you are not far enough along in the pregnancy for the genital area to be developed. At conception, all babies are considered girls.
Memory serves me, any OB/GYN folks out there help me, I think its around the beginning of the 2nd Trimester is where gender will develop. The genital tube will either develop as a boy or girl at that time. So, in the case of ultrasound, timing is everything.

When my niece had her ultrasound, we got lucky. He was on his back, legs spread and one little weenie sticking straight up in the air; she was far enough along in the pregnancy to where that area was developed enough to tell if the apple had a stem or not.

This is the reason why in Canada (where I am from) that the doctors will not tell exspectant parents what they are having, because the ultra sounds are not always correct. There is no way to tell forsure until your precious little baby is born. My suggestion, wait until the baby is born, if it's healthy, be extremely happy. Don't worry enjoy your pregnancy, enjoy your baby wether it;s a boy or a girl. Good luck to you

An ultrasound can tell for certain if it's a boy, because the penis is hard to miss! But, there's a chance that they may think it's a girl, but it's a boy and the penis was tucked out of view.

Ultrasounds are not always right in my experience. If they tell you its a boy it is usually right because they can see the penis. If they say its a girl it can be wrong because they can just miss seeing seeing the penis because the baby is in the wrong position. I have four kids; two boys and two girls.

its very easy to miss the picture of one very tiny body part. on that blurry ultrasound. if the arm or leg is in the way they may not know for sure.
how could you know if the test s didn't say your having a boy?
get another ultrasound. and/or look at the picture.
and
beware of old wives tales.

Well, I am not sure I fully understand the question the way it is worded. No, ultrasounds are not 100%. Only an amniocentesis is 100% on the sex. If you are having a boy go shopping for little boy stuff.... have fun and happy pregnancy.....:-)
