How can water expire? Bottles of water list an expiration date. So, how can water expire?

It's not the water molecules that "expire", but the storage mechanisms surrounding the water. Careful with low grade plastics used to make those hand held water bottles, they DO deteriorate over time. There was some press coverage on recommendation NOT to re-use such bottles.

Also, there are limitations on the sterility of water bottles, as there is always a chance bacteria can grow inside the bottle, so the expiration is a protection against this.

I think the first part of the answer is most likely though, as you can google the press coverage on that for a source.

Water expires because there's an expiration date.

My drinking water comes from a tap, although I know some people like to pay extra for water that comes in plastic bottles.
