How do I get two printers to be installed at one time to work?

I have a Dell 720 and a Dell 540 (4x6 inch photo printer). When the 720 is installed it works fine... but when I added the 540, the 540 worked, but the 720 lost communication with the computer. The only way I can get the 720 working again is to uninstall the 540! Anybodie have any ideas why??
The 720 is set as default. So when I want to print a photo I choose the 540 in a drop menu. Also both printers are online and ready, plus I already tried disabling the 540 temporarly to see if the 720 would work, and it didn't. Both printers are usb.
any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Check the ports you are using.. It might be an I/o read error. I hate printers..

Did you go to Control Panel-> Printers to make sure they are both installed?
