I don't say this often. Excellent question. Refreshing change from the usual bomb-throwing nonsense. Our greatness, and our love for country still exists, and probably always will.
The sad fact of the matter is that it's under assault from within and without. It ain't dead but it's on the outs. Sadly, I am familiar with the comparisons to the Roman Empire, and I really cant' argue that.
Enjoy it while it lasts I say.

The problem is that America has been far too insular and out of touch with the rest of the world for far too long. There has also been a very strong line of self indoctrination.
When Americans say only in America they think that it really refers to something that literally can only happen in America. But whether it is a poor man becoming a multimillionaire, an unknown reaching the height of politics or anything else like that, it frequently happens far more often and easier outside of America. Outside of America the same expression is used when there is a school massacre or some other unbelievable incident!
The rest of the world know quite a lot about each others countries, habits, politics and particularly news and events. America is isolated from it, thus, American ideas are usually way out of touch with everyone else.
Americans give off an aura of superiority and frequently look down on other countries and nationalities as if they are somehow inferior beings. This leads to them thinking they are disliked, but once they have lived outside the States for a little while the problem disappears as they become more rounded and knowledgeable.
Most countries in the world would have welcomed leadership from America but got what amounts to dictatorship. Therefore America keeps making political enemies and allienating the people of the world. France is so implacably opposed to American influence it stops anything American led automatically.
So there is a dichotomy. A large part of the world already think America is no longer great and that Russia or China may well take over leadership.
Americans in their isolated world will no doubt go on thinking they are great in their own minds and within their own borders.

I sincerely believe that America will have its downfall. Once America was great in all aspects and everyone loved us. Now,we have leaders who look bad and some of our people are ignorant and do not want to learn about different cultures.
I, however, am not patritiotic or as patriotic as I used to be. Change that- I am not patriotic at all. I like America but I do not love it. Same with the people.
I really would not say we are great, we are decent. If we were great we'd opt for changes.

I hate saying it, but I think we're in serious trouble. Love of country is one thing, but worship of country (and leaders) with religious overtones is quite another. A lot of otherwise healthy attitudes have solidified into unhealthy extremes, and we seem to be on the downward spiral. There's notihing wrong with the individual people of this nation--we have all sorts, just like any country does--but it's the soul of the nation as a whole which is ailing. My greatest hope is that we can embrace the changes that are coming and turn the coming times of troubles into times of opportunity instead, and use our energy to raise something new and good from the ashes of the old.

The best way to get the answer to your question is to look back at the 9-11-01 incident. The public outpouring of help in the form of donations of money and blood; the flags hanging from rows of houses. The shock waves from this attack effected everyone and everything. Even the crime rate dropped to near zero! People that didn't get along before were working hand-in-hand to help in any possible way they could find to help. The terrorists tried to break us down. They failed! When we are attacked, we worked together. It made us closer, maybe closer than we have ever been. We may disagree on some things, but when push comes to shove, the all-American spirit comes out in all of us!

The decline is inevitable but it will not be a sudden collapse. China and India are emerging as important powers along with Russia and Europe. Japan will soon begin competing as never before. The world is changing and the only sane path for the American empire to seek to do is to help it mutate toward a peaceful international community.
