I own a 2002 ford focus automatic SE, which is still under purchased extended warranty.

The problem is that when I am driving at about 60mph, it jerks as though someone has just stepped on the brakes. Also, when I am at a stop light, it cuts out. I hear a loud electrical inteferrence, the ABS and the brakes lights come one, then the engine cuts out. It doesn't happen everytime, but becoming more common. After it cuts out, I put the car in park and start it again and it is fine. My husband seems to think its the transmission, but he's not a car person.

I only have saturdays to go the dealership, so I would like to have an idea before I go in and wait 4 hours, to find out its not covered in my warranty.

Also do they charge to look at cars to see whats wrong, as in, if i decide not to fix it right away, will i have a $300 bill? Any help is appreciated!

Yes there is a diagnostic charge, even if they find nothing. I had this problem with my Saturn (but not at 60 - started at 40) it turned out to be the oxygen sensor - about $200 to fix a couple of years ago. If you have it fixed, there is no diagnostic charge it is just one bill. I believe if you have it fixed they don't charge a diagnostic fee.

The charge will depend if they find something and what extended warranty you have (as some can be real ******* about covering anything)

Usually if it's the fuel pump, the first sign would be no acceleration while in passing mode (as that has been 99.9% of the fuel pump symptoms I've ever hit on a Focus)

My guess is a misfire from the ignition (the jerk at 60) but the abs and brake light come on because the engine has died. but to find the idle problem would be hard (probable air leak or the throttle body needing to be cleaned)

You need to have it scanned and brought in to a shop (like the dealer) and bite the bullet on the initial diagnosis as with any warranty company you will pay for initial diagnosis no matter what (with the warranty company picking it up after repair depending upon the company itself.. some do , some don't)

Hope this gives some ideas

I also had the same problem for the first time yesterday in my 2002 Focus ZX5. After waiting for a tow, the tow truck operator hopped in and the car started - although right after it stalled out, all of the displays went out - low or no voltage and it would not even crank. I checked the battery voltage (12.6 with car off) and 14 or so with car running indicating charging circuit was running after I got home. New battery had same, although there might have been a slightly higher charging voltage on old battery. Let me know if you diagnose the problem.

Unless it is a warranty issue they can charge you to look at the car.
When was your last tune up? Sounds like spark plugs and wires, cap and rotor problems.
You should also get it scanned for the lights coming on.
After you get the car fixed sell it and get something better more depenable than a ford.

They should not charge you to look at it. My wife has the same car with the same problem. The dealerships have not been able to find the issue. It is electrical and what is happining is that when the car has the problem with the electronics, your fuel pump is cutting off causing the "jerk" and stall.

u should actually check up the oil level in the engine and check wether the transmission parts are well lubricated and see wether the brake pads are well cleaned .while smashing brakes hard the pads get jammed and a noise comes out while running.
