Personal I prefer to use a second internal hard drive with backup software. I let the software backup my system once a week.
There are several very good methods to this job.
As I mentioned an internal drive. There are very cheap these days an can be restored fairly quickly, considering there speed.
Second choice for me would be an external USB/Firewire/SCSI drive. This is not only convenient but very portable.
If you do not have very much to back up a USB drive or Compact Flash works very well. You are limited to about 4Gb do to cost thought.
DVDs are a good option but are time consuming to use.
CDs are just limited compared to everything else on the market.

You can purchase a new internal CD burner for less than $50 at a discount computer shop. If you don't want to do that and you have an old computer you can hook it up to the computer needing a backup through a parallel or USB cable. I did that once before when I got a new computer some years ago...don't remember how I did it though.

Perhaps a new drive because that would be cheapest. Other more expensive alternatives: buy a large flash drive (up to 8 gig I think they are available) or an external hard drive and copy one to other. Both latter more expensive than new CD Rom.

There is a mass storage drive like thumb drive. You can connect it through USB ports and simply transfer the files.I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
