Is there an explanation to the cognitive nature of depression that helps understand the condition as a whole?

Cognitively speaking, someone would say that depression is caused and sustained by constantly thinking you're worthless and all that great stuff. You think it long enough and it becomes true, basically psyching yourself out.

In the cognitive sense?
God forbid anyone does that in this modern age of chemical imbalances and norepinephrine/dopamine - saratonin re-uptake - monoamise oxidase inhibitors, etc, etc...
However

A sense of self-worth (or lack thereof)
