Very easy to take care of. All you need is aquarium gravel, especially for your very first planted aquarium. If you have a strong full-spectrum aquarium light, you should keep it on 6-8 hours every day. Start with 8 and if you start to see algae growth, decrease it to 6 or 7. You can buy little bottles of liquid fertilizer for aquatic plants at the petstore, and putting some of that in at the beginning may help with growth. Eventually you should add some fish to add CO2 to the aquarium unless you want to bother with artificially injecting CO2 into the aquarium, but make sure you don't get fish that will eat your plants, like plecos.

I got bulbs from Walmart and stuck them down among the rocks on the bottom of the tank. The tank was in the living room and got moderate amounts of light just from being in a room with good windows. They grew VERY well. But, my African Clawed Frog thought they looked fun, and mangled them to death... but before that, they were great!

I found that live plants seem to do better if you put a layer of clean sand under the gravel. Be careful though, live plants carry other things you might not want in your aquarium, like snails and other parisites. I used to just leave the lighs on during the day and turned them off at night. Or visa versa.

I would not buy live plants in my fish tank because it is really hard to take care of. And also if it starts to die, it will spread bacteria in the water and affect you fish and tank.
