The student asks the master, What is the point of life?
The master says, Enlightenment.
The student says, How do I achieve Enlightenment?
The master says, You give up everything.
The student says, Then I will not be living.
The master recites, Practice thirty more years.

If you want something you can never have there are two possibilities. One, you are underestimating yourself and what you want is actually very possible.
Two, you want the wrong things and as you grow as a person you will find those things don't matter.
You heard Beautiful Day by U2? "What you don't have you don't need it now" I love that song. Another quote "More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones."
And the god thing- why does it matter? If you are right and we were created to want things we can't have then that god would be a complete wanker and can just be disregarded and ignored while you get on with finding what you want your life to be about

How depressed do you want to be? How far do you want to take this discussion? Playing the bad guy, I can think of a great many more depressing ideas than the one you presented. That is not really the point though. The point of living is a combination of things. One is to love others. I know many don't get that one. Another is to persevere. Hang in there no matter what. Life is not about giving up. Life is about keeping hope and continuing the struggle. God does not want you to give up. So where does that leave us? Where is our hope? What reason do we have to continue the struggle? The first reason is to realize that though we struggle, GOD loves us. Though we ere, in spite of all our faults, GOD loves us. There is always a way. It is not always easy, but it is always there. Refer to the Bible. God gave his only begotten Son for us on the cross. His Son, Jesus the Christ, was buried for three days and nights. That same Jesus made himself alive again and rose from the grave. That same Jesus loves us so much that he chose to die for our sakes. That is where we can find hope. That is where the promise lies. Accept the gift of God which is eternal life through Christ Jesus. It really is that simple.

the things you wanted then are not necessarily the things you want now. the things you want now might not even be the "right" things for you. How many times have we said, "How could I have been so stupid?"
the point of living is to learn and the more we learn, in general, the happier we become.
Don't blame God.
Oh, and by the way, be VERY careful with what you want in this life because you may well end up getting it and then it's too late! We so often ask for exactly what we DON'T need!

Who says you can never have them? God doesn't do all the work. You as an individual need to pitch in some effort. We are after all His children. When you were a child did your mom just hand you the things you wanted? Or did you have to help earn them? I know if I wanted to go to the show with my friends I had to wash some dishes or do some vacuuming. I had to work toward my goal. She didn't just hand me money because I deserved it. I deserved it because I worked toward a goal. Desire causes pain when the desire is not received. Especially if you know that you did nothing to help the desire to become a reality. Nothing is out of reach. Maybe that is what God is trying to teach you. Also... living is not about the material items one can possess. It's about family and love... being kind and respectful... those are the true qualities that make one happy. Even if you can not have children. If you can't then it is for a purpose. God really trusts the women that aren't able to have children of their own. It takes a strong, loving individual to adopt and love a child unconditionally especially when it doesn't come from her womb. Nothing is unreachable. Sometimes there are obstacle courses but there is always a way. Good luck to you and may God bless!

The point of living is to look beyond yourself. Be a good human. Do your part to make this world a better place. Life is not about "things". Doing for others gives you a great feeling, unlike any other.

Like what? money, cars, expensive clothes...?

Learn to love your life, and be satisfied with what you do have- no one on this earth DESERVES anything.

If its something emotional- maybe your dissatisfaction is blocking you from those things. Also, sometimes if we look really hard within yourself- you find why....

"Cruel God" well- firstly, that is not a true statement. He has done many things miraculous and good, look to see if you are missing a chance to learn a lesson from your situation THEN evaluate this again.

Guess you are finding out that life is not just about wanting/getting?

This physical reality is one of 'opposites' - giving AND getting.

Perhaps you have missed the giving part, disallowing you the 'getting' opposite?

And about a 'cruel' God, as you state?

Try viewing this life/reality WITHOUT the element of a 'GOD' in the picture? This is NOT forbidden, or blasphemy - just an exercise in allowing yourself the freedom to see/feel the opposite of what you presently believe. . .

It's all about opposites!!!

Maybe "cruel God" realizes you really don't need them.
One of the points in living is finding the right things in life. You just haven't found them yet.

If you are basing your existence purely on pursuing the superficial, only then do I see the point to your question!=P
Otherwise, we're placed here to experience life, as a human being to explore our capabilities, flaws, etc.
After all, didn't some of the worlds' greatest men suffered before they hit it 'big'?
Take for example, 'The Donald' (as in Trump), as I recall he hit a slump at some point almost near bankruptcy but he rose 'gain stronger than ever.
By what? Sheer determination.
Other greats include, Ray Charles he had to overcome his blindness & in turn became one of the pioneers in music history today.
If these people chose to 'give up' on life, would we've gain from their legacy? What lessons do we take from ourselves?
Life is a journey NOT a destination.

God give people a brain so they can think for themselves and not covet what other people have. If you cannot afford the things that you want, try going back to school to get the education to get a better job so you can afford better things, but they will not make you happy. Things or other people cannot make you happy unless you are wanting to be happy. Some people just like to be miserable and try to make the people around them miserable too.
