He is old enough to drink plain water now, but it really isn't necessary. Breastmilk (or formula) still provides all the liquid he needs.

My daughter has been drinking plain water since she was about 10 months or so (she is 15 months tomorrow). I asked the doc after I saw my mother-in-law giving her water out of a regular water bottle, and he said it was fine.

If you're not giving him tap water (which is best) than you can go to Walmart and buy "nursery" water which they add the necessary nutrients (minerals) that's "lost" in the distillation process; it's only a $1. While my kids were still on formula and drinking juices I didn't give them water. Don't forget to dilute the juices with water (1/2 and 1/2) to prevent numerous/gross BMs.

And you've never given him water?! I was told to stay away from water during the first months because my baby was premature and the doctors worried about the calories; and even then I was able to give him a drink of water when he was 2 1/2 months old. (He didn't like much, though) So check with your doctor to see if he has a condition which prevents him from drinking water, otherwise you should be fine.

I'm assuming you mean tap water??? It depends on the town you live in. You can call the city hall if you live in town, or call your water district if you live in a rural area and they will tell you about teh nitrates, etc in the water and if it is safe to give to a baby.

i had same worries when i was still new to mama stuff...but i was ad-viced by my pedia to give water after meals and after drinking milk and once in a while actually...helps to prevent constipation, etc. well for u to be really sure just ask your pedia how much water your baby must take in a day coz milk and juices are liquids too its also counted...just be sure that the water you give is safe...i used distilled water to my kids when they were still babies but cooled boiled water is ok too...

If he is breastfed, he doesn't really need it for the first year (if you nurse regularly). Formula fed babies can have a little water with solid foods. This site - http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/giving-water-to-baby.html gives information about water, what types are suitable etc

Plain boiled water is fine from any age but take extra care with hygiene while he is so small.
