It's not necessarily bad, but if taken to extremes anything can be bad. We want cheap stuff so we allow our stuff to be made by sweatshop workers in crappy countries. We wanna shop on holidays so we're ok with retail workers never getting the day off. I saw a commercial once where a home decor store was going to be open on Thanksgiving day. It made me sad for the people who worked there because really, how many people are going to go there and spend money? Consumerism is a good thing because it drives our economy and ensures people have jobs and a place to live, but at the same time our greed and lack of sensitivity can take it overboard sometimes.

Consumerism as any other thing you do in excess, shows that something else is missing that you try to compensate.
The ideal is that you consume what you really need to have a comfortable life. If you become a slave of HAVING TO HAVE, that is poor.

When taken to extreme, it shows that people are either more interested in the show of wealth than having any real substance to their lives or do not have anything more meaningful in their life.
