Let's assume you're talking about McPherson struts. It's kind of expensive if you have it done, but it's not hard to do yourself. I just did all four on my Neon. They were about 60 bucks each. You will need a spring compressor, though. Auto Zone loans them out free, some places charge you. Most places want something like 500 to 700 bucks to do all four, and they usually recommend that you replace at least both fronts or both rears at the same time if you're not replacing all four because if you don't, your car will handle poorly. Dinosaur is right about the quick struts, they are a lot easier to install, but if you're going to spend that kind of money, you might as well have it done by a shop.

It is not that expensive to fix but it is very dangerous if you do not have the correct equipment. Whatever you do, do not release the nut on the top of the strut unless you have that spring compressed, you can get hurt very badly.
New strut priced from $35-$50 depending on what brand and grade you want.
Replacement at a garage from an hour to an hour and a half.

Depends on the car but a quick strut kit works the best and is easiest to replace and no injury danger from the strut .And if one went bad and broke the passenger's side will follow. they all come all pre-assembled to install with a new coil spring.{ No danger of compressing and installing spring(s) on a new strut}[ very dangerouse task even with spring compressor's for one person to do ! ].
A little know how and a couple of hours with tools.I bought two for my 95neon at murrays auto parts $159.00 each (with the use of a floor-jack&jack-stands,metric hand wrenches, one metric-socket foot-lbs tourque wrench) two hours later the car was on the road like new with No other parts to buy.
