they learnt, toiled, practised and worshipped cricket and broke many records
vivian richards as an allrounder
brian lara as a batsman
courtney walsh and curtley ambrose as ballers
their records are taller than them and their passion (for cricket and their country) speaks louder than their words

West Indians are cricket crazye people. The way Vivian Richards played the attacking cricket against all oppositions and his contribution to the West Indies Cricket Team's fortune made his a national hero. Though Lara, Walsh etc. also created records, the do not match the way in which Richards played and got the applause of the people.

Well... the others are all well regarded in the West Indies, especially Lara because of his world records, but Viv is an absolute god of cricket because:
1. The style of his batting...ALWAYS attacking, he never took a backwards step against anyone.
2. He was big, strong, and powerful..but his big hitting ALWAYS relied on his expert timing and never his strength. He only had to touch the ball and it would go for six.
3. His attitude..he was a really nice guy, but he had a little touch of arrogance about him and was very brave (he never wore a helmet)..and he never let any bowler subdue or scare him.
4. He dominated the opposition just by walking out on the pitch.. he was a hugely impressive guy both physically and mentally.
5. He did a lot of charity work in Antigua, and has often spoke out against oppression of the poor.
6. He twice refused to be bribed by the then aparthied government of South Africa to go on rebel tours to SA in the 1980s.

There are great players Lara, Sachin, Kallis, Ponting but they all are not heroes the reason why Vivian is a hero is simple. He not only scored runs but also spoilled the form of bowlers but hitting them like a hammer breaking a stone.

He dated someone called Ms.Neena Gupta. I don't think Walsh or Ambrose could manage that.
Gary Sobers managed a Ms. Anju Mahendroo - so he turned into a national hero as well.
