PC - In my experience the best software is Nero. But your computer probably already came with something like Roxio.
Anyway, as far as +/-.... I prefer the MINUS. In my experience a greater number of DVD Players accept the minus discs (especially the older ones). If you are just archiving data... there's probably no noticeable difference.

If your laptop has DVD+/- RW drive then it should be able to burn both DVD+ and DVD- either R or RW. I think you should take your 'puter in as there may be something wrong with it.
Software? For Mac, I would say Roxio Toast. PCs? Sorry, don't know.

DVD +R is a format very similar to VHS DVD -R is a competing format like Beta optimal game enthusiasts will use the two format. optimal computing device recorders will checklist the two. I opt to checklist on +R media because of the reality basically approximately each DVD participant as we communicate will play them. A +/- RW is a DVD which may well be written on erased and used lower back. on your case your computing device will play and checklist any modern DVD or CD rewritable or no longer. each little element this is modern.

I recommend Sonic's Roxio. It does a great job without the complex programs of other software. DVD-RW for rewriting and DVD-R for permanent.

I have seen that most people answering the computer questions dont speak english. they just talk a bunch of s**t that alot of people dont understand so I am going to try to help you out a little bit. About the + and - bit... I have never seen a diff. between them. so it doesnt matter what one you use. but you may want to try differnt DVDR's I have seen that it doesnt matter what DVD I use my player will read it. but my friends player will only read Sony DVDR's Try differnt ones and find the best one for your player. For the Burning program I have always used Nero and DVD Shirnk. you can find the free ver. online by searching for them. and if you know what you are doing you can get the full ver. for free also. But like I said dont go by what everyone is telling you. Just try differnt ones till you find the one that works best for you.
Have fun and P.L.U.R
