Depends on the company. If they're on the high street then yes; if you've never heard of them then steer clear.
If the names not on the entry, or if you were told you're a winner via a pop up then its not a real competition.
Only enter via the official company website. For example, many tv stations have competitions you cna enter using the website.

Is it MMoRPG competition? be sure you have a anti-virus protection and a firewall better sure check the website of the organizer first, ask queries through email maybe they will give you proper procedure for you to enter their competitions.

Safe... as far as hackkers, etc.. viruses, etc? Probably no poblem but.. the major problem is that your email is then OUT THERE and you will be bombarded with all sorts of spam email to include viruses, etc as a result of your entering even one contest.. I do not do it because of the enormous amouint of spam

Safe as doing anything else.
Be careful not to download or accept anything you are not sure of what it is.
Virus programmes will not detect software that you download that allows access to your files by someone else.
