Oh I just love it when people ask this one. Yes, God tell us He wants us to be united,, so the devil runs with this and puts falsehood into it. Because God ALSO says we can only be truly united if we are united in the truth and of the faith of Jesus. So, if we are all one big church, as God warns will come in the last days, this is NOT what GOd wants. He tells us His truths in the Bible. His truths, not yours or mine. But, He also tells us not to go where we hear error preached, to follow we He reveals in His writing and in direct revealtion he gives, even more so in the last days. So, if you and I are a whole lot of other people arent on the same page, we ALL believe differtnly, how could we be united in the truth , if we all have a different truth???? How could we be united in faith, if we arent of the same faith. /?? God warns us in the Bible that this belief will get pushed on us all, that its of the devil and we are not to allow ourselves to be a part of it. SO, Christians that are strong in their faith, will not ever accept being one big happy, so called united church. We arent to give up our religious freedoms, and our desire to worship as we please. If noone wants to worship, thats their choice and they should have the right to make it. We Christians will stand to the end, even if it means our life , to defend our right to worship as we please. Noone has the right to take that from anyone, and for those who think this should go ahead and happen. Now , maybe you arent into Bible, or a certain faith, but if they take away these rights, what rights of yours will they take away. Will you be forced to worship at some point? YEP, but it will be a false god. Bible foretells this all, and this is why most Christians are fanatic about this. If fanatic means holding onto your truths, then Christians need to be fanatic. and we have as much right as athiests do to not be forced into worship. America is losing many rights, look around you , you will see. It is coming and Jesus is coming SOON to end the mess. I hope that tells you why we feel as we do. We want to be united and its what God wants, but only in truth. Why do you think wars have been fought since time over religion? Noone wants to give up what they believe, and shouldnt have to. no matter what side you are on. if you give govt power to take this right, will the next forced thing be something you dont want???? Think on this one. Christians and athiests alike, all... need to wake up and stake stands. Even if my beliefs arent yours, defend my right to have them, or one day you will lose your rights too.

i m not really interested in all that since i m an agnostic, but i have been raised in an orthodox country and i can tell u what i understand. first of all i dont believe the dogmatic differences were ever so important really, it was a political issue to begin with..But it will be hard to go 1000 back and change them still, after such a long stubbornity. the greatest problem used to be the mentality and structure differences. roman catholics were very centralised, giving the pope extreme power, often oppressing, only preaching in latin bla bla, while in the old times both protestants and orthodoxes were milder, protestants more liberal, orthodoxes more humancentric. for instance only catholic priests do not marry etc... Orthodoxes were always a little introversive on the other hand. (i m not sure thats the right word). thats for the menatlity differences. But they main problem was and still is that everyone (i mean the people who run the churches) is very comfortable in their own institutions, fighting for power and money and they wouldnt like to share it with anyone else. so they influence people against it. thats simple. i dont think very highly of any church, sorry. Besides, catholicism and orthodoxie (unlike protestantism) are both somehow parts of specific cultures and culture identities , in europe at least, thats what would make it difficult for people to except this kind of change. catholics are not for ecumenism anymore then the others two.

Well unite under what. After all Im sure the early jewish leaders tried hard for Christ to stop preaching his message so that they could all be united.

Just because every church calls themselves Christians doesn't mean they are. If all churches simply followed biblical truth this would be easy. But you have some churches who worship statues and Mary, some churches are pro-homosexual, some churches believe in dancing with snakes, some churches the bible isnt even welcome.

Ecumenism is the downfalling of Christianity.

It would prevent women from being priest, bishops and leaders.

It would force all people to think the same.

This is how the Crusades came about, through leadership that insisted this was required by God.

Let's get it clear, IF we followed the Biblical rules we'd either have to accept women and gays or have to throw them out.

"Women are to keep silent in the church"

That's a rule from Paul

According to Paul you are sinful if you are friends with a fornicator.

OK, so now we purge women, gays, fornicators, friends of fornicators.

You'll have the world's smallest congregation or the worlds largest congregation of active sinners!

Haggered would be out in a flash

So would any gay Caltholic priest.

Out. Excommunicated.

You going to be flexible on the rules, a gay priest is ok but a gay parishoner is not.

If you're going to make rules, they have to be uniformed and you break them, you ain't a friend of God or Jesus anymore, you're going to hell, get out, go live with the Pagans whom you emulate!

By being non-ecumenism people are free to find their own way.

As a matter of fact it is Catholics are against those who are not catholics. I suggest you read the book "Brothers Karamazov" by Fydor Dostosvi. There is a chapter on what the church would do if Christ comes back to the earth.
