Hi,

We have Syrian hamsters, 14 to be exact. Not a single one has ever hissed or bitten. Syrian hamsters are not vicious. We keep our hamsters in a 40 gallon aquarium with a reptile lid. No escapes. (unless you leave lid open). There are a few things that could be wrong with your hamster. First off, do NOT under any circumstances use any kind of cedar shavings. It is very toxic and will affect behaviour ie. aggressiveness. The hamster could also be terrified of you. You need to coax him out with treats. Giant sunflower seeds, blueberries, celery, carrots etc.
Never just reach in and grab him, let him come to you.

One other reason he could be acting this way is that he could be in pain. Has he ever been dropped, or has he jumped and fallen?

Try putting your hamster in an aquarium. The Hagen 40 gallon is a perfect size. 18" wide X 36" long and 15" high. Or 18" high.
Talk to him and let him sniff your hand before trying to pick him up. Ours see us and come running and will climb into our hands to be picked up.

Hamsters love fruits and vegetables and it is easy to gain his trust with that kind of reward.

Please do not hesitate to ask me questions or tell me more about your hamster so we can resolve your problem.

Nancy

how old is he? sounds like he hasn't been handled or interacted with much. maybe was even abused before u got him. u dont have a cat do u--that could make him uneasy. do NOT get him a playmate as they r solitary & that will worsen the problem.if he's had that many cages that can make him stressed from the constant change. if he's continually escaping then his cages have been too small & he is bored. u need a larger aquarium as suggested above or connect 2 or 3 cages with tubes. also, get him a hamster ball. they need daily exercise in it & most of them love it---until they get old. put him in the ball 2-4 hours a day---hours not minutes. mine run like this every day & never try to escape because they are satisfied. put him back every 45 minutes so he can get a drink and then he'll chew to let u know he's ready to get back in the ball. just hold the ball next to the cage door & he'll jump right in. use tape on the lid.

try to talk to him more often to get him used to u. the ball will help him get some energy out & feel less stressed. u can open the ball with it on your lap & let him crawl out onto u so he gets used to your smell. u can scoop him back up with it. too. under no circumstances do u hit him. they will stay afraid if u do & never accept & trust u. do not wake him. interact with him when he's already awake.

good luck!

OK... well there is nothing you can do about it now.... but..... if you are planning on getting a new hamster make sure that you feed and play with it everyday. Then your hamster will be comfortable around you and wont hiss or bite. About the cages, put duct tape over all the openings. Believe me. It works.

Well first of all you seem to be having a problem with a nasty hamster.First things first 1.Do not handle your critter with bare hands, use a turkish towel or a thick material to have your hands covered, gloves made of rubber do not suffice your critter will bite through rubber.2.Back off when he gets nasty, hisses, caus he means business.cover his eyes if you do pick him up if the need be it will calm him down.3.Have him inspected by a vet he could be infected with some pathogen.4.Get him a playmate a her if it's he or vice versa.4.Be slow in your approach do not rush him.5.Lastly feed him well, keep his enclosure clean and have water always present for him to drink, gravity bottels work fine.Give him some time and space to get to know you.Everything will workout fine.

Siberian dwarf hamsters are really vicious. I owned one, after it bit me enough times I feed it to my snake. Good luck with the hamster thing, their ways are really hard to change. Once vicious, always vicious.
