i am en electrician. there are several differnt ways you can od it. if you are putting a fan where a light used to be, unless you do some rewiring you will have 2 maybe three wires. a hot a neutral and possiblly a ground. your fan, if it has a light on it will have four wires. the standard colors are white, black, blue and green. The white need to connect to the white wire in the cieling. If there is only a switch on the wall to operate the fan you will have to connect both the blue and the black wires to the other wire in the celing. Use the wall switch to operate the light and the pull chain on the fan to operate the fan.. note that the switch will have to be on in order for the fan to work. If you are confortable with wiring. Look for a wire that is hot all the time (not on a switch) in your celing box. if you have on there, connect that to the black wire so the fan will work regardless of whether or not the switch is on. turn the power off before you work, and make sure you follow the instructions. fans are heavy and need strong support and the virate, which has a tendency to loosen screws over time. so make sure it is supported well. you might even have to buy a different ceiling box. if this is the case, you are better off hiring an electrician. it is too much for me to type here. but having a qualified someone do it will put your mind at ease. Is the red wire on the fan? it is is it is for a light. if the red wire is in the ceiling it could be several things you can check to see if it is operate by a switch. if it is, hook it up to the light on the fan. If nothign else, put a wire nut on it and don't use it till you know what it does. I need to knwo if you are replaceing an existing celing fan or replacing a light, in order to help you more.

Did you not get directions with the fan? You also didn't say if there is a light fixture attached.
OK so you already know that the white is the neutral wire. So out of the other two (Red & Black) it is likely that one is for the fan motor, & the other is for the lights (if you have lights).
Sometimes there is the availability to control the fan & the lights from separate wall switches, so that is why the manufacturer has separate circuits for the lights & the fan.
If you only have one wall switch available then you should be able to connect the black & red wires together, & put them on to the black wire that is in your ceiling box.
That way your wall switch will turn power on to both the fan & the lights on the lights. You will then have to control the fan & the lights separatly from the many pull chains that are hanging from the fixture. Figuring all of those out is the hard part for me.

There is basically 3 main wires to hooking up your fan: I white wire, a black one, and a copper or bare wire (this is your ground). ALWAYS make sure power is off to the outlet you are connecting your fan to and not just the light switch but the breaker as well. If this is a normal installation, then the 3 wires I mentioned will coordinate with the 3 wires already existing in your ceiling. If the wire colors are different, you may want to consult someone before attempting this installation. Good Luck!! :)

Tie the red in with the black wire if you want them switched by one switch. If you have a 2 wall switch set up then res to one switch leg and black to the other switch leg. They are both power wires one for the fan and one for the light.

In the box that the ceiling fan came in should have directions on how to connect the wires together. If you need more help contact a Lowe's or Home Depot, they can help. Also the website below can help too!

Does the fan have a light kit. The red wire may be for the light fixture. Tie it in on the hot side.

If the red wire is coming from the box, then the red and black are both swithed hots. One is for the fan, the other for the light. Do you have two switchs on the wall??

The third wire is the GROUND, the best advice is to get some help, not even from a professional but from someone that has done it before. The light/fan will work without the ground but its not the safest way to operate.

retrac has th right answer, if you have only one hot wire comeing out of the cieling then the blacks and red will all be connected together.
ALSO, if there wasnt a fan there before, make sure you have a fan box that will support the fan, or it may be on the floor in no time.

They will run a red wire for three way switches, eg. if you turn the light on by one doorway you can turn it off at another doorway. When I do the fans I do the black to black and white to white.
