For Calgary, see the link below. It's a website for students who are on a budget, and has up-to-date rental information.

I wouldn't be banking on finding anything you can classify as "cheap" in either city. Expect to start in the $800 range per month and up in Calgary providing you can find some dingy apartment that doesn't have a lineup to the door with people wanting to rent it. Edmonton is not much better where Calgary's vacancy rate is at .5%, Edmonton's is at 1.5%. You may actually find an apartment if you're willing to look in Edmonton.
You can check the rentals available in the local newspapers:
www.edmontonjournal.com and www.calgarysun.com and look in the classified section under rentals.
Forget about those on line rental websites - by the time you ever get to see them or ask about them - they've already been rented out. The newspaper is probably your best bet to check out what's available immediately.
Hopefully you have friends, relatives or a church group for back up. Good Luck.

Edmonton (and Calgary too, I believe) is experiencing a boom right now. Rental accommodation has gone up about $300 per month in the past month or two. Suites are snapped up as soon as they are listed, or don't even make it to listing.

Good luck. I hope you find something you can afford.

Sorry but it would be very difficult in any of those Cities! However, you could consider the youth hostels. They are both super nice and definitely affordable.
Check out their web sites for rules and regulations. Even if you could stay a for a few weeks in one it may help you.
Cheers from Edmonton.

In short, you CANNOT find low-cost accommodation of good quality in Calgary any more. Demand has badly outstripped supply. (Hint: there are many good jobs in neighbouring Saskatchewan, where rents and house prices are far lower.)

I don't think you'll find anything cheap. Rental rates are through the roof. Maybe you should look at buying.
